Klaipėda first hosted the Tall Ships Races in 2009, and it’s quickly becoming a regular fixture in the sail training calendar. We couldn’t wait to visit this vibrant port again as part of the Tall Ships Races 2017, and the city certainly didn’t disappoint.
The Tall Ships Races 2017 took part in Klaipėda at the same time as the Sea Festival – a unique combination of culture, nature and history. Throughout the four days of festivities, hundreds of thousands of visitors came to see the magnificent Tall Ships.
Klaipėda is the third-largest and oldest city in Lithuania, and it’s celebrating its 765th anniversary. It’s situated on the Baltic Sea, it’s the country’s biggest port, and it’s one of the only ice-free ports in northern Europe.
This vibrant city has its own university, which acts as a scientific and cultural centre. The influential Lithuanian Christian College has just celebrated its 10th anniversary, and goes from strength to strength.
Tourism is becoming increasingly important to life in Klaipėda, and major investments are being made to promote it. The newly opened passenger cruise terminal, close to the city centre, will bring increased traffic to the area in the years to come.
