Biography

The design and build of Tunas Samudera was jointly funded by the British and Malaysian governments.  She was handed over to the Malaysian Navy in 1989 in a joint ceremony by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Majesty Yan Di-Pertuan Agong.  The ship is operated as a sail training vessel by the Royal Malaysian Navy, but training voyages are run for civilian youth groups as well as navy cadets.  Her name means Offspring of the Ocean.  She is a sister ship to the Australian Navy’s Young Endeavour which was built in the same yard two years earlier.
