Tall Ships Races 2017: Stunning Parade of Sail marks end of ‘largest event ever’ in Kotka

Posted on: 16.07.17

Large crowds gathered in Kotka to bid farewell to the Tall Ships Races 2017 fleet on Sunday (16 July) after a hugely successful third visit to the city.

A large flotilla of vessels was out on the water in bright summer sunshine to watch the Parade of Sail before the fleet headed out to sea for its Cruise-in-Company to Turku, the second Finnish port on this year’s race route.

The City of Kotka’s Culture Director, Antti Karjalainen, said the visit of the Tall Ships Races 2017 was “the largest event that has ever been organised in Kotka.”

“International visitors have been a big part of Kotka’s history so it’s been great to see so many people from all over the world back in the city,” he added.

During the four-day visit many of the vessels opened their decks to the public to show what life is like on board a sail training vessel. One ship alone reported hosting a total of 12,000 visitors over the period.

After the fleet’s departure, Race Director Mike Bowles, said:

“We’ve been delighted with our port stay here in Kotka for the Tall Ships Races 2017. It has been our third visit and once again the trainees taking part have been overwhelmed by the warm welcome and hospitality shown by the people of Kotka.

“It’s been a pleasure to work with the excellent team here including the many dedicated volunteers who have helped to make the Tall Ships fleet’s stay such a resounding success.

“On behalf of the 73 vessels setting sail today and the trainees who represent 30 different nations, I’d like to pass on our heartfelt thanks for all the efforts that went into organising this hugely successful event including the many cultural and sporting activities organised for the young people taking part.

“We’re thrilled that around 50 young people from Kotka are on board various vessels for the Cruise-in-Company to Turku, and I’m sure they will all return to their hometown with lifelong memories of their time on board. I’m sure today’s departure and Parade of Sail in these near-perfect conditions will be a highlight that they will all remember for many years to come.

“Kotka has once again proven itself to be a wonderful host for the Tall Ships Races and we look forward to returning again in the future.”

Paul Thompson, Sail Training International’s Commercial Director, said all the feedback from trainees about the visit to Kotka had been “overwhelmingly positive”.

“The beaming smiles on their faces showed just what a great time they’ve all had here in Kotka,” he said.

One of the trainees currently on board the Finnish yacht, Merisusi, is 17-year-old Tuomas Koistinen.

“I applied to take part in Tall Ships Races 2017 as I love sailing and I’ve never been overseas on a boat so I wanted a challenge for myself. It’s been a great stay in Kotka and I’m looking forward to the Cruise-in-Company to Turku. It’s going to be an interesting experience,” Tuomas said.
